Wigan Youth Parliament members announced at Town Hall ceremony
Wigan’s new Members of the UK Youth Parliament have been announced at an inauguration ceremony held at Wigan Town Hall.
Abi Fletcher, 17, and Samuel Fakoya, 16, will take up the two roles, representing young people from across the borough at both regional and national level. Their duties will include attending the UK Youth Parliament’s annual sitting in the House of Commons later this year.
Eleven members of the Wigan and Leigh Youth Cabinet stood in the election, with more than 12,000 students from schools across the borough casting their votes in recent months.
Councillor Laura Flynn, Wigan Council’s Lead Member for Youth Opportunities and Equalities, said:
"Well done to all the young people who have stood for election; it takes courage to put yourself forward and stand up for what you believe in.
“Many congratulations to the young people who have been elected to become Members of the UK Youth Parliament – we look forward to working with you to help achieve your manifestoes.
"A big thank you and well done to the young people who have previously served as the Youth Parliament Members for Wigan and Leigh over the last 2 years; you and your families should be so proud of all you have achieved.
“Thank you also to our amazing youth workers who support our young people on Wigan and Leigh Youth Cabinet and have made these elections possible, plus all the schools who have enabled their pupils to have their say by facilitating the voting. For many of our young people, it will be their first time participating in a democratic vote, and it is a great way to educate them as citizens of the future.
“The Council is committed to seeking and hearing the views of young people and ensuring they are involved in decisions that affect them and their futures. We will continue to work with the Members of Youth Parliament, Youth Cabinet, youth groups and partners to bring positive change and improve the lives of young people in the borough.”
Abi, from Leigh, said “It honestly feels absolutely amazing to be elected. I’ve had a role in the past as campaigns’ co-ordinator, supporting previous MYP’s, but I’ve never actually been able to act on what I’m passionate about and now I’ve got an opportunity and a platform to be a voice for local young people. I want to help create a Curriculum for Life in schools and make sure that our youth provision is accessible for all young people.”
Samuel, from Lowton, added “It was a surprise to win the election tonight and I can’t stop smiling, I’m very excited! My goal is to help set up more safe spaces for young people, where they can be who they want to be and express themselves.”
Bronwyne Dando and Conner Redhead have been appointed as Deputy Members of the UK Youth Parliament for the borough. Sonny Mayall will take on the role of Campaigns Co-ordinator, supporting the new representatives in their work.
