Wigan pupils help shape new badge for GMP operation

Pupils from Parklee Primary School in Atherton have created a new logo for one of Greater Manchester Police's operations.
Operation Sheriff is a multi-agency initiative targeting the movement of drugs and weapons into prison facilities.
The winning design, which was created by 10-year-old Jaxx Jones will feature on all of the leaflets which will be distributed to local residents in the lead up to the operation taking place.
To celebrate the school’s contribution, the GMP Drone Unit visited the school to deliver an interactive session on how drones are used in policing. Which included how the force are dealing with the threat of drone-based smuggling attempts into prisons.
Sergeant Dan Canavan from our Wigan district said: “It has been fantastic to see the pupils at Parklee Primary School getting involved and helping us design a badge for an upcoming operation which will take place across the Force.
“The creativity and enthusiasm are one of the main reasons why we reached out to them, having worked with the school on multiple occasions, we knew they would do us proud.
“Engaging with schools like this not only helps us raise awareness of the work we’re doing in Wigan at the prison we have on our patch, but across the whole of Greater Manchester, but it may also inspire the next generation to think about careers in policing.
“We’re incredibly proud of the partnership and the positive impact it’s having.”
The Headteacher of Parklee Primary Mrs Roper said: “What an unbelievable experience, it was amazing, and the children loved it as did the staff did!”
“The Year 6 pupils were so impressed and inspired by how you use drones in policing. Having the whole school involved was an added bonus too, it has given us a lot to talk about with the children.
“Thank you so much for providing these amazing opportunities for us. You make such a difference to the children’s wider personal development, and we really appreciate it.”
