Wigan Man Avoids Jail After Harassing Woman Over Four Days

A Wigan man has received a suspended jail sentence after admitting to harassing a woman over a four-day period.
39-year-old Scott Smith of Elmsbury Street, Ashton, was sentenced at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court after pleading guilty to harassment between November 16 and 20. An earlier allegation of stalking was dropped when no evidence was offered by the prosecution.
The court heard that Smith repeatedly targeted the woman over several days, including attending her home, triggering her alarm system, attempting to gain entry, and making repeated mobile phone calls from an unknown number. He also posted derogatory remarks about her on social media.
Magistrates imposed a 26-week custodial sentence, suspended for two years, following his guilty plea.
