Wigan Bike Library launches with free monthly cycle loans

A new bike loan service is set to launch in Wigan this weekend.

The Wigan Bike Library will officially open on Saturday, 21 February, at The Brick Works on Hodson Street. The initiative is being delivered in partnership with cycling charity Gearing Up and aims to make cycling more accessible to local residents.

Modelled on the successful Leigh Bike Library at the Leigh Sports Village, the new Wigan scheme will allow people to borrow bikes, helmets and other cycling equipment free of charge for up to one month at a time.

A wide range of bikes will be available in both adult and children’s sizes. Volunteer mechanics will also be on hand to provide free maintenance and repairs to help keep bikes safe and roadworthy.

After two months, borrowers who wish to keep their bike will have the option to purchase it at a significantly reduced cost compared with buying new.

From its launch, Wigan Bike Library will operate on the third Saturday of each month from 9am to 12 noon, and every Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm.
