Leigh volunteer honoured on 95th birthday

A long-serving volunteer at Wigan & Leigh Hospice has been celebrating a big milestone, as Dorothy, from Leigh, marked her 95th birthday.
Dorothy, a familiar face at the hospice’s Bradshawgate shop in Wigan, has dedicated almost 36 years to volunteering. Since first joining in 1990, she has become a well-known and valued member of the local community, recognised for her friendly nature, humour and continued commitment to supporting the charity.
Reflecting on her time volunteering, Dorothy said: "The company. You get so many lovely people coming in and we get used to the same people coming in and having a chat to them.
"And of course, it's great to serve the hospice, it's a really good cause."
Over the decades, Dorothy has welcomed thousands of customers through the shop’s doors, helping to raise vital funds while also creating a warm and welcoming environment for visitors and fellow volunteers alike.

Jane Dutton, Retail Development Manager at Wigan & Leigh Hospice, said: "Dorothy is an absolute inspiration to all of us. Her commitment, energy and positivity are extraordinary, and she brings so much joy to our Bradshawgate shop. Volunteers like Dorothy are the heart of our Retail Team – they give their time so generously and make our shops such welcoming places for the community. We are incredibly grateful for everything she has done over the past 36 years, and we're delighted to celebrate this very special birthday with her."
Dorothy’s birthday was marked at the Bradshawgate shop, where colleagues, fellow volunteers and regular customers came together to celebrate the occasion and recognise her long-standing contribution.
Wigan & Leigh Hospice is supported by more than 600 volunteers across its shops and services. Their efforts are essential in helping the charity raise the £12,000 needed each day to provide specialist palliative and end-of-life care across the borough.
