Corrie star re-opens hospice charity shop in Shevington

Actor Ryan Prescott officially reopened Wigan & Leigh Hospice’s refurbished charity shop in Shevington on Friday 27 February.

Shoppers gathered from 10am at the store on Gathurst Lane for the reopening, where Ryan, who plays Ryan Connor in the soap, cut the ribbon. He spent time speaking with volunteers, staff and supporters as customers explored the updated layout and browsed items including clothing, accessories, toys, books and household goods.

The refurbishment was carried out with support from Greenmount Projects, which donated its time to complete the work.

Jane Dutton, Retail Development Manager at Wigan & Leigh Hospice, said: “This refurbishment has been important for our customers but has also made a big difference to our volunteers who now have more space to store and sort the donations that come into our shop. So much of the work in a charity shop goes on behind the scenes and this new layout makes it easier for our volunteers, who do so much to support the hospice.

“We are so grateful to Greenmount Projects, once again, for making our vision for this shop a reality, and I hope our customers enjoy browsing the new-look shop.”

Refreshments were provided on the day by The Little Carpet Shop, which donated the new flooring, and by Shevington Village Kitchen and Catering, which supplied sandwiches and sweet treats for volunteers and guests.

The refurbishment includes a brighter shop floor and an extended sorting area at the rear of the building, providing additional workspace for volunteers who process donations.

The Shevington branch is one of eleven hospice retail outlets across the borough, raising funds to support specialist care services in Wigan and Leigh. The updated store will contribute to the hospice’s ongoing running costs.

The shop is located at 43 Gathurst Lane, Shevington, WN6 8HW. There is a small parking area at the front of the store, with additional on-street parking available.

Opening times are Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm; Saturday, 10:00am to 3:00pm; and closed on Sundays.
