Cineworld in Leigh to be closed by cinema chain

The Cineworld cinema in Leigh is to close following further restructuring at the entertainment chain.

The company has revealed further closure plans following a restructuring plan announced in July to stablise its finances.

Many cinemas have struggled following the pandemic as audiences turned to watching movies at home on streaming services.

The chain say the changes will enable the company to address "unsustainable operating costs".

The company is set to invest up to £35 million on refurbishing existing cinemas.

Javier Sotomayor, president of Cineworld International said: "The successful completion of our restructuring plan, achieved with the crucial support of our landlords, protects thousands of jobs across the UK and provides us with the financial stability to continue investing in delivering extraordinary experiences for our valued customers.

"This milestone sets the stage for a brighter future, enabling Cineworld to continue sharing joy in communities across the UK for many years to come."

The company did not confirm the closure dates for the Leigh cinema, or comment on the number of jobs which may be impacted following the changes.
